Read the ingredients on your current treats
Most “herbal” small-animal treats are held together with sugar, honey or molasses, with a little herb sprinkled on top for the photo. Rabbits and guinea pigs have digestive systems that handle sugar badly — it feeds the wrong gut bacteria and, over time, contributes to obesity and gut problems.
bunnyNature My Little Sweetheart is sugar-free. The flavour comes from the actual plant.
The five flavours
- Dandelion — a rabbit favourite; the classic wild forage plant
- Red Berries — sweet-tasting without added sugar
- Elderberry
- Peppermint — often useful for a rabbit that’s a bit gassy
- Thyme
Feeding
A treat is a treat. One or two hearts a day is plenty for a rabbit or guinea pig — they are best used for hand-taming a nervous animal, or as a reward, rather than fed freely.
Why you won’t find this at the big chains
Burgess and bunnyNature are distributed in Australia exclusively to independent specialist retailers — the large chains cannot stock them. If you’ve been buying your rabbit’s food from a big-box pet store, this is a genuine step up, and this is one of the few places in Australia you can get it.
